چکیده
Authors' conclusions Based on low quality of evidence, LTOT (~ 15 hours/day) decreases all-cause mortality in patients with COPD who have severe hypoxemia (PaO2 ~ 50 mm Hg) and heart failure. The effect for all-cause mortality had borderline statistical significance when the control group was no LTOT: one study. Based on low quality of evidence, there is no beneficial effect of LTOT on all-cause mortality at 3 and 7 years in patients with COPD who have mild-tomoderate hypoxemia (PaO2 ~ 59–65 mm Hg).1 Based on very low quality of evidence, there is some suggestion that LTOT may have a beneficial effect over time on FEV1 and PaCO2 in patients with COPD who have severe hypoxemia and heart failure: improved methods are needed. Based on very low quality of evidence, there is no beneficial effect of LTOT on lung function or exercise factors in patients with COPD who have mild-to-moderate hypoxemia, whether survivors or nonsurvivors are assessed. Based on low to very low quality of evidence, LTOT does not prevent readmissions in patient with COPD who have severe hypoxemia. Limited data suggest LTOT increases the risk of hospitalizations. Limited work has been performed evaluating the safety of LTOT by severity of hypoxemia. Based on low to very low quality of evidence, LTOT may have a beneficial effect over time on healthrelated quality of life in patients with COPD who have severe hypoxemia. Limited work using disease-specific instruments has been performed. Ethical constraints of not providing LTOT to eligible patients with COPD prohibit future studies from examining LTOT outcomes in an ideal way.

Serum and Saliva Theophylline Levels in Adult Outpatients with Asthma and Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD): A Cross-Sectional Study
Due to a narrow therapeutic range, measurment of theophylline serum levels is highly recommended in patients with a long-term theophylline therapy. In this regard, since blood sampling is an invasive method, exploring alternative methods using other biological fluids in particular saliva samples are targeted. This study was designed to determine any relationship between serum and saliva levels ...

Background: Pulmonary rehabilitation is an important part of treatment in patients with COPD (Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease) with the goal of achieving and maintaining maximum functional independence since this disease causes symptoms including fatigue, and consequently decrease in daily living activity. Aim: To determine the effect of home-based pulmonary rehabilitation on daily living...
متن کاملThe Relationship between Serum Uric Acid and Severity of Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD)
Introduction: Some evidence exists about the possible relationship between the serum uric acid (UA) and exacerbation of the chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). Present study intended to compare the COPD-related variables and the one-year outcome between the two groups of patients with the high and low UA. Material and Methods: This cohort study consisted of 112 patients with COPD exac...
متن کاملDetermination of the factors affecting duration of hospitalization inpatients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) in Iran
Abstract Background: Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is a major cause of morbidity and mortality, and is an important health economic problem. Since 1960, there has been an increase in mortality associated with COPD, especially in men. Acute exacerbations form a major component of the socioeconomic burden of COPD which mainly results in long-term hospitalization. Despite the hi...
متن کاملMetabolic Syndrome in Chemical Warfare Patients with Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease
Introduction: Sulfur mustard (SM), a toxic alkylating gas, can cause serious long-term pulmonary complications such as chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). Metabolic syndrome (MetS) is one of the important comorbidities of COPD. This study was designed to evaluate the frequency of metabolic syndrome in Iranian chemical warfare patients (CWPs) with COPD. Materials and Methods: Thirty ...
